Frequently Asked Questions
How is GPA calculated?
GPA (Grade Point Average) = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours. Grade points for each course = Grade Point Value × Credit Hours. Example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course = 12 grade points. A B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course = 13.2 grade points. GPA = (12 + 13.2) ÷ (3 + 4) = 25.2 ÷ 7 = 3.6.
What is a good GPA?
A GPA of 3.5–4.0 is considered excellent and typically qualifies for Dean's List honors. A 3.0 (B average) is generally considered good and meets most academic requirements. Most graduate schools require a minimum of 3.0 for admission. Competitive employers often use 3.5+ as a threshold.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
Cumulative GPA = (Previous GPA × Previous Credits + New Semester GPA × New Credits) ÷ (Previous Credits + New Credits). Use the Cumulative GPA toggle above to combine this semester with your previous GPA automatically.
What GPA do I need to graduate with honors?
Common standards: Cum Laude = 3.5 GPA, Magna Cum Laude = 3.7 GPA, Summa Cum Laude = 3.9–4.0 GPA. Some universities use class rank percentiles instead of fixed GPA cutoffs.
Does an A+ give a higher GPA than an A?
In most US colleges, A+ and A are both worth 4.0 grade points. Some high schools award 4.3 for an A+. This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale where A+ = 4.0.
How many credit hours should I take per semester?
Full-time students typically take 12–18 credit hours per semester. 15 credits is the standard load to graduate in 4 years assuming 120 total credits required.
Can I raise my GPA significantly in one semester?
It depends on how many credits you have already completed. The more credits you have, the harder it is to move your GPA. Use the cumulative GPA calculator above to model exactly how much improvement is possible.
