What should I weigh for my height?
Ideal weight depends on height, gender, age, muscle mass, and bone density. As a general guide, a healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) gives the weight range: Healthy weight (kg) = 18.5 to 24.9 × height² (in meters). For example, at 175 cm: healthy range = 18.5 × 1.75² to 24.9 × 1.75² = 56.6 to 76.2 kg (125–168 lbs). The three medical formulas (Robinson, Miller, Devine) give a point estimate within this range.
What is the Robinson formula for ideal weight?
The Robinson formula (1983) is: Men: 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet. Women: 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet. Example for a 5'10" man (10 inches over 5 feet): 52 + (1.9 × 10) = 52 + 19 = 71 kg (156 lbs). This is the most widely used ideal weight formula in clinical practice.
What is the Devine formula?
The Devine formula (1974) was the original ideal body weight calculation, developed to estimate drug dosing in patients. Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. It's still widely used in pharmaceutical dosing calculations (chemotherapy, anesthesia) but tends to underestimate ideal weight for shorter individuals.
Are ideal weight formulas accurate?
These formulas provide estimates, not exact targets. They don't account for muscle mass, bone density, age, ethnicity, or fitness level. A muscular athlete may weigh significantly more than their 'ideal' weight while being perfectly healthy. Body composition (ratio of fat to muscle) is more meaningful than a number on the scale. Use these formulas as a rough guide alongside BMI, body fat percentage, and input from your healthcare provider.
Is BMI or ideal weight more accurate?
Neither is perfectly accurate for individuals, but they serve different purposes. BMI gives a healthy weight range (18.5–24.9). Ideal weight formulas give a single point estimate. Both are based on height and gender only and ignore body composition. For clinical purposes, waist circumference (below 94 cm for men, 80 cm for women) combined with BMI gives a better picture of health risk than either measure alone.
How does body frame size affect ideal weight?
Body frame size (small, medium, large) affects how much a person should ideally weigh. Larger frames have heavier bone structure and can healthily carry more weight. Estimate your frame by wrapping your thumb and middle finger around your wrist: if they overlap = small frame, if they just touch = medium frame, if they don't touch = large frame. Large-framed individuals may be 10% above the formula estimate and still be in a healthy range.
What is the healthiest way to reach my ideal weight?
Sustainable weight loss or gain requires a modest calorie deficit or surplus (300–500 calories/day), combined with resistance training to preserve or build muscle. Crash diets that create large deficits (1,000+ calories/day) cause muscle loss, metabolic adaptation, and almost always result in weight regain. A realistic healthy rate is 0.5–1 kg (1–2 lbs) per week. Prioritize sleep, protein intake (1.6–2.2g per kg body weight), and consistency over speed.
